Thank god that I play jazz. So these farkakteh six-string cowboy triads–especially the dreaded F major barre chord–are of no use to me. But, for those of you who are interested in playing these plain jane movable triads, check your nut height. A lot of guitars have the nut slots cut too damn shallow. You could also just tune down to Eb standard… or better yet, D standard.

@Karkaraff The string may be directly under one of the joints in your finger. There in an indentation of the skin at those places which makes it harder to get proper pressure to push the strings down. You might need to place your finger a little higher or lower across the guitar neck so that a string isn’t there. Also, let gravity work for you. Much of the pressure needed to fret the strings should come from the weight of your arm. Don’t sqeeze the neck like a baseball bat.

you’ve got too slow down a tad, 3rd finger fourth fret, sixth finger eight fret 12th finger 20th fret, see what I mean, its confusing at first.

@LilyAshlyn I know what you mean. But I guess its kinda helpful if ur doing other bar chords, or chords in the same area on the neck. That way you don’t have to move ur hand too much.

I thought I would never learn to play bar chords, but it takes practice. You have to do it everyday. Now it”s so easy, I can’t believe it such a big deal. I learned some finger strength techniques that helped. 1. Use rubber bands. Wrap them around your fingers and flex. 2. Hand grips 3. Table top excersises. 4. Lot’s of stretching.
Nothing beats practice. My friend has short stubb fat fingers and he plays amazing guitar, it can be done, just practice everyday.

I don’t get it. These bar chords sound EXACTLY the same as doing a regular easy C or G so why not do the easy version instead of the painful bar chords?

@Catsuing Your hand is too weak I would say.. Everyones is at first!! It is not a shape we have ever used, but just like everything else.. Practice practice practice!! Try just barring all the strings across at first.. Forget about the 3 other fingers.. Just barre every fret up and down the neck, when you feel like you are getting pressure all across the neck with your first finger try and add the A shape and E shape to the 6th string and 5th string root.. Start SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW!!!

    December 17th, 2010 at 11:23 | #19

@videos97 LOL well with practice your hands are only going to hurt alot worse before they get better.. But the more you play the less they will hurt and the better you will get!!! If you give up, what calouses you have on your fingers will go away and you will have to start all over again!!You already know how much it hurts.. Believe me, once you have the calouses it wont hurt at all!! remember that! DON’t GIVE UP!!

@leopower7 HMMMMM it is not your hands… It is your atitude. Don’t give up! You can do it!

    December 17th, 2010 at 12:40 | #21

@jon0441 Yes you can come out of a pentatonic scale end on the ROOT and then strum the barre chord! Sounds sweet!

@Slyther55 There are plenty of songs that dont use barre chords.Practice your open chords.Once you get strength in your hands you will be able to barre. Don’t get frustrated! Sometimes lay the shapes down first and then the barre and other times the Barre first and then the shapes.Mix it up. Try just using your first finger and barre ever fret up and down the neck.. Your hands need to get stronger. You have never used that position beforeKeep your finger straight as you can, even bowed other way

  24. CRAIGARRR
    December 17th, 2010 at 14:48 | #24

@teamneville21 Unfortunately the only way is to keep practicing.. Try just going up and down the neck just barring the frets all the way across from thick E to thin E string with first finger.. Forget about the E or A shape with your 3 other fingers for now.. Build your strength up in your first finger.. Place thumb in middle of the neck for strength.. When you can strum all 6 strings and get a clean sound without buzzing move on to the E and A shapes with your other fingers. Don’t give up!

great video and great advice. most new guitarists never spend enough time with the EQ to properly adjust it to the sound they’re looking for. They automatically look for pedals or other guitars before even fiddling with whats already there!

@zucca3902 turn down the distortion, dont stand right in front of the amp, or facing it, and give it more treble

@Quakelord1991 the evil cookie is right, haha it may not even be that your out of tune but that your bending your strings slightly which makes the notes themselves slightly out of tune making a vibrating/humm sound

    December 17th, 2010 at 19:45 | #36

So true the differant places change de sound… but ALSO the number of people in it. You set your sound before a show and then, when people arrive, the soundwaves crash on their cloths and them and it alters the sound…

Great video, the body/voice/attack was a new way to think it out for me, thanks !
